  1. Place Value: A digit’s place tells its position in a number: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands. The place name depends on the digit’s position from the right.
  2. Value of a Digit: The value of a digit is the digit multiplied by the value of its place. For example, 6 in 64,000 has a value of 60,000.
  3. Expanded Form: Expanded form shows the value of each digit separately. For example, 34,521 = 30,000 + 4,000 + 500 + 20 + 1.
  4. Standard Form: Standard form writes a number using digits. Add the place values in the expanded form and write the resulting number.
  5. Word Form: Word form writes a number in words. Read the number from left to right by periods such as thousands, while keeping place values clear.
  6. Comparing Numbers: Compare numbers from the greatest place value to the smallest. The first place where the digits differ determines which number is greater.
  7. Ordering Numbers: To order numbers from least to greatest, start with the smallest number. For greatest to least, start with the largest number.
  8. Rounding: To round to a place, look at the digit immediately to its right. If that digit is 5 or more, increase the rounding digit by 1; if it is 4 or less, keep it the same and change following digits to zeros.
